ATAS certificates for Indian students: when you need one and how to plan

What ATAS is

The Academic Technology Approval Scheme applies to certain postgraduate courses and research in subjects where knowledge could be misused. It is a security clearance for the course, not an assessment of your academic ability, and it is separate from your university offer and your visa application.

Who needs it

• Nationals of countries not on the GOV.UK exemption list, which includes India.
• Students on courses whose subject area falls within ATAS. Postgraduate diplomas and PGCEs do not require it.
• The requirement is decided by the course, so two courses with similar titles can differ. Your university will tell you whether ATAS applies.

Building ATAS into your timeline

   Confirm the requirement

   Check your offer letter or ask the admissions team whether your course requires ATAS.

   Apply straight away

   Apply as soon as you have the course details you need. Do not wait until other conditions are met.

   Allow at least six weeks

   GOV.UK says applications take at least 30 working days and complex cases can take longer.

   Then apply for your visa

   For the Student visa, the ATAS certificate must be obtained before you apply.

Subjects where it often applies

ATAS frequently affects postgraduate courses in areas such as artificial intelligence, advanced computing, engineering and physics. If you are considering an AI Master's in the UK or a Computer Science Master's, assume you may need ATAS until your university confirms otherwise.
