UK Master's degrees for Indian students: an academic-first guide
A UK taught Master's is usually an intensive one-year qualification. For Indian graduates, the decisions that matter most are course fit, how your grades will be read, English evidence, the full cost and your plans after graduation, rather than how quickly you can obtain an offer.

Quick answer
Can Indian students do a UK Master's with a three-year bachelor's degree?
Often, yes. Many UK universities accept three-year Indian bachelor's degrees for taught Master's courses, but every university sets its own India-specific requirements, including minimum percentages or CGPA, and some courses ask for a four-year degree or a closely related subject. Always check the country-specific entry requirements for each course.

How a UK taught Master's is structured
Most UK taught Master's degrees (MSc, MA, MRes and similar) combine taught modules with an independent dissertation or project. Full-time courses commonly run for around twelve months, with modules across two teaching terms followed by the dissertation over the summer. That compression is the defining feature: there is little time to adjust once the course starts, so choosing the right course matters more than in a longer degree.
In the UK's national qualifications frameworks, Master's degrees sit at Level 7 of the FHEQ in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and Level 11 of the SCQF in Scotland. Many taught Master's are awarded with Pass, Merit or Distinction, although each university sets its own regulations. How UK universities assess Indian degrees
UK universities publish country-specific guidance for applicants from India. These pages translate UK expectations, such as an upper second-class (2:1) degree, into Indian percentages or CGPA. The conversions are set by each university, so the same 62% may meet one university's requirement and fall short of another's.
| Factor | What universities look at | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Degree length | Whether a three-year degree is accepted for the course, or a four-year degree is required | Read the India entry page for each course, not just the general requirements |
| Percentage or CGPA | The university's own conversion table, sometimes varying by institution tier | Use your final or current aggregate exactly as shown on your transcripts |
| Subject background | Whether your degree prepares you for the course content | Compare your modules against the course's stated prerequisites |
| Backlogs | Some universities ask about failed papers that were later cleared | Disclose accurately; policies differ and are not always published |
| Experience | Relevant work, projects or research, particularly for professional or conversion courses | Evidence what you did and what you learned, not just job titles |
English language evidence
For a Student visa at degree level, your English must be equivalent to CEFR level B2, and GOV.UK states that a higher education provider can assess this itself. In practice, universities set their own course requirements, which are often higher than B2 and may include minimum scores in each component.
- Many universities accept IELTS Academic; several also accept tests such as PTE Academic or TOEFL iBT.
- Some universities accept a medium of instruction letter confirming your degree was taught in English. This is a university decision and can differ by course.
- Check whether the test must be taken within a set period before the course starts.
ATAS clearance for technology and engineering courses
Some postgraduate courses in sensitive technology areas require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate. Indian nationals are not on the exempt list, so if your course requires ATAS you must obtain the certificate before applying for your Student visa.
Budgeting for the full cost
Tuition fees vary widely by university and subject and change each year, so use the fee published on the course page for your intake. Beyond tuition, plan for the visa application fee, the Immigration Health Surcharge, living costs, accommodation deposits and travel. Our guide to UK Master's fees and costs sets out a worksheet using official figures.
| Item | Official figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Student visa application from outside the UK | £558 | GOV.UK Student visa |
| Immigration Health Surcharge for students | £776 per year of visa (half rate for extra periods of six months or less) | GOV.UK healthcare surcharge |
| Maintenance funds for visa evidence, outside London | £1,171 per month, up to 9 months (£10,539) | GOV.UK Student visa: money |
| Maintenance funds for visa evidence, London | £1,529 per month, up to 9 months (£13,761) | GOV.UK Student visa: money |
Visas, partners and life after the course
- You can apply for a Student visa up to six months before your course starts if you are outside the UK, and GOV.UK says decisions usually take about three weeks.
- Maintenance funds must be held for at least 28 consecutive days, ending within 31 days of your visa application.
- If your postgraduate course started on or after 1 January 2024, you can only bring a partner or children if it is a PhD, another doctorate or a research-based higher degree, or if you are government-sponsored.
- The Graduate visa lasts 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026 and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027. It cannot be extended, although you may be able to switch to another visa.
For most students starting a one-year Master's from September 2026 onwards, the 18-month Graduate visa rule is the one to plan around. Immigration rules change, so treat this as general information and always check GOV.UK before making decisions.
Choosing a course: questions worth asking
- What do the core modules actually teach, and does my degree prepare me for them?
- Is this an advanced course for specialists or a conversion course for graduates from other subjects?
- What does the dissertation or project involve, and who supervises it?
- What have graduates of this course gone on to do, and is that relevant to my goals?
- What is the total cost for my intake, and how would I fund it without assuming part-time work?
- Does the course require ATAS, and does my timeline allow for it?
Subject-specific guidance is available for Computer Science Master's in the UK and Artificial Intelligence Master's in the UK.
Frequently asked questions
Is a UK one-year Master's recognised in India?
Recognition depends on the purpose, such as employment, further study or public-sector eligibility, and on the relevant Indian body's current rules. Check the latest position with the organisation that will rely on your qualification before you enrol.
Do I need work experience for a UK Master's?
Most taught Master's in computing and science do not require work experience, although some professional and management courses do. Relevant experience can strengthen an application where your grades are borderline.
Can I bring my spouse on a taught Master's?
Not usually. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, dependants are only permitted for doctorates, research-based higher degrees or government-sponsored students. See GOV.UK guidance on family members.
When should I start preparing for a September intake?
Ideally ten to twelve months before the course starts. Popular courses can close early, and ATAS, deposits and visa funds all take time. Our UK Master's application guide sets out a month-by-month plan.
Does Britvia guarantee admission?
No. No adviser can guarantee admission or a visa. Universities make their own decisions and visas are decided by UK Visas and Immigration. We help you make better decisions and prepare stronger applications.
